5 Easy Ways to Get a Better Night’s Sleep

A Better Night’s Sleep… Is That Even Possible?

Sleep… it is something we all know we need, yet it is something a lot of us struggle to get enough of. Us mommas know, all too well, that’s a better night’s sleep can be a game changer for us. Our interactions with our kiddos are much better when we’ve had a good night’s sleep.

I know, sometimes we have no control over our little ones waking us up in the middle of the night. That just gives us even more reason to make sure we are doing what we can to drift off to sleep quickly. Here are 5 easy ways to get a better night’s sleep…

Have a Routine

Have a night time routine is crucial to getting a better night’s sleep. We give our kids a bedtime routine, so why not ourselves? Having a night time ritual tells your body that it’s time to relax and wind down from your day. Your nighttime routine could include the following:

Loading the dishwasher should be part of your daily cleaning routine. I do this every night to set me up for a more successful morning.

Saying your prayers is a great way to end the night. It gives you time to thank the Lord for your day and to give things over to him. This will help with those nagging thoughts that are bound to creep in while you are trying to fall asleep.

Aroma Therapy

Get yourself an essential oil diffuser and diffuse some essential oils in your bedroom. This will help you relax your way to a better night’s sleep. Everyone is different and will find different scents more relaxing than others. My personal favorite bedtime scents are lavender and vanilla. If you are new to essential oils, get some tips on how to get started with essential oils.

Magnesium Oil

Magnesium oil is another natural sleep aid. Just take the oil and rub it onto your feet and legs before you go to sleep. Magnesium oil also helps with sore and cramped muscles. This is a win-win in my book since sore muscles can keep you from a good night’s sleep as well.

Less Technology at Night Time

Using technology right before bedtime is the exactly the opposite of what you should be doing to get a better night’s sleep.

Try reading the Bible or another book before bed, instead of cruising through your phone. If you can’t get yourself to stay off your phone before bed, then I suggest using your blue light filter, if you have one built-in, or install one from your app store.

This Blue Light Filter is one that I use. You can set it on a timer so that it turns on at the same time every night and turns itself off each morning.

The blue light from your device is a huge part of what is keeping your mind going when you are trying to fall asleep. There are also many Apps out there that will allow you to set a timer on your phone so that your blue light filter turns on at a certain time each night and then off again in the morning.

Get More Sunlight

Last but not least, it is important to control your exposure to light. We use this method with newborn babies when they have their days and nights confused, so it would only make sense that we would continue to use this method as adults. Spend more time outside, and when you can’t do that, open up the blinds in your house and/or workspace. At night, keep the lights down and sleep in as dark of a room as possible.

I hope you find yourself getting a better night’s sleep in the upcoming days. What do you do to make sure you are getting plenty of sleep? I would love to know!

I believe aroma therapy really does work. Just think about everyday smells and how they effect you… that’s basically all aroma therapy is. Plus, there is the huge added bonus that it is all natural and you are only breathing in pure plants… no nasty chemicals. Thanks for reading! 🙂

I really think I need a new mattress. After sleeping so much better when I was visiting my family over the holidays, this became apparent to me! I also could do better about unplugging from technology earlier in the evening.

Great tips! I never thought that spending more time outside would affect my sleep, but I totally see that. Especially with my girls. When they’ve had an active day of outdoor activities, they are usually out like a light at bedtime. Yet on the days when they have been inside all day, it takes longer for them to fall asleep.

Yep, it’s like we forget these simple things as adults. Our bodies still work the same way with light, even though we are older. Thanks for reading!
