How To Clean Your Room and Keep It Clean
Let’s talk about the nitty and gritty of being a busy mom! Cleaning the rest of the house is a no-brainer and often is front and center on your to-do list. But when it comes to your own bedroom, it can easily become a forgotten space.
I have been working hard to make sure that my room stays in order because it’s my escape away from everything else. I can go in there and read a book, watch a show, and rest, without the added stress of feeling like I need to pick up around me.
Let’s take a few minutes to explain how to clean your room, and keep it clean, so it’s easy to manage and you can enjoy a gorgeous oasis in your home.
How To Clean Your Room Perfectly
There are several steps you can take to make sure your room is in prime condition. Cleaning your room on a regular basis will save you loads of time, and it feels so good to relax when it’s clean. Give yourself the gift of enjoying your bedroom to it’s fullest. I promise you won’t regret it.
Okay, let’s get started so you can have the most delightful living space in your entire home!
Get Rid Of Clutter
Go through your entire room and decide what you need to keep and what needs to be donated or tossed. There is no point in keeping things around that don’t have a purpose or that you don’t enjoy.
It doesn’t matter what room you are talking about; clutter is a bad thing. It takes up too much valuable space and is proven to bring on stress.
I would even go as far as to say minimize what is in your bedroom as much as possible. If you want to KEEP your room clean you have to have less stuff. It’s that plain and simple.
Fewer objects on the dresser mean it’s easier to dust and prevent that clutter pile up.
A small wardrobe means there will be fewer piles of laundry at the end of the bed.
Just trust me when I say you need to minimize your bedroom. It will be life-changing… for real. I believe in this SO much that I have an entire email series on this. Declutter Your Closet
If you have clothes that no longer fit, go ahead and get rid of them. Extra clothes that you don’t wear, take up a lot of space, and you will enjoy the extra closet space without them.
Plus, if you are hanging onto them hoping that you are going to fit back into those skinny jeans, ask yourself if you are ever really going to wear them again. If the answer is “no,” then it’s time to get rid of them.
Make sure that everything in your closet is completely organized. Put like items together like jeans, shirts, or dress clothes. It is so nice to have a clean and organized closet when you are trying to look for something.
Here’s an entire post I wrote about how to declutter a closet with a lot more info.
Organize Each Space In Your Bedroom
Once you have decluttered and only have left what you actually use and love, you can make sure it is all organized.
I already have a whole post on unique ways to organize your bedroom, so be sure to read that later.
Deep Clean Everything In Your Bedroom
Start by getting your bedroom as clean as possible and then you will be able to move into keeping up with.
Put in the extra work now to make less work for yourself from here on out.
Wipe Down All Surfaces
Wipe down all the surfaces in your room. Clean the dressers, tables, photos, wall hangings, light fixtures, and other spaces. Don’t leave any nook or cranny untouched.
If you are going to take the time to do all this cleaning, you should make it worth your effort to do some deep cleaning. Don’t forget about wiping down any mirrors and even your windows too.
Clean Your Curtains and Blinds
I know that cleaning your curtains or blinds is not at the top of your list! But It feels so good when you walk into your freshly clean bedroom, and everything from the floor to the ceiling is clean.
Trust me; you will appreciate it after it’s done.
Clean your Mattress
I know that you may be confused and wonder why in the world you would need to clean your mattress. While it’s not something we necessarily think about cleaning, those things actually get really gross!
Your bed is filled with all sorts of yucky germs, bacteria, and even dust mites. No one wants to sleep in a bed that’s covered with all that junk! Trust me, learning how to clean your room wouldn’t be complete without this step.
Do it now while you are deep cleaning your bedroom and then you won’t have to think about it again for a while.
Before you clean your mattress you’ll need to take off the sheets so might as well throw the bedding in the wash while you are at it.
Clean-Up All The Little Things!
This fits in really well with making sure you get rid of all your clutter.
It seems we collect a lot of small things in our bedroom. Go through all of those things and clean them plus get rid of the unnecessary. Here are some examples of what I am talking about:
- jewelry
- makeup
- change/money
- keys
- earbuds
- books
- hair ties
Clean Your Electronics
We have a television in our room, plus and old Xbox that we use to watch DVDs. Boy does it get dusty on the dresser where they are.
Take a look at my guide on how to clean your electronics so you can get everything cleaned the right way. Most of us have at least a television in our bedroom, plus some more electronics too!
Clean The Floors
Our room is one of the least vacuumed rooms in the house because the other rooms just get more attention. So whether you have hard floors or carpet clean up those floors.
Give your hard floors a good scrub and those carpets a nice vacuum.
Don’t forget under the bed. The number of furballs under ours, from my dogs, is probably embarrassing. I love our Shark Vacuum for dealing with all the pesky dog hair.
Clean Your Master Bathroom
If you have an attached master bath (we don’t actually have one), you need to make sure to deep clean it too while you are at it. You can quickly clean your bathroom in just 15 minutes!
You can also take a look at my small bathroom organization ideas.
Now Keep Up With It In Your Daily Routine
That’s it! Now you have a clean room! Once you get your deep cleaning and decluttering done, you’ll be able to keep your bedroom tidy with relative ease.
But you can’t let it go!
Add things like dusting and vacuuming your bedroom to your weekly cleaning routine.
Then try to develop some of the following habits:
- put clothes away as soon as they are clean
- put clothes back or in the hamper as soon as they are taken off
- declutter the dresser and nightstand tops each day
These simple habits will keep your room clean, clutter-free, and a peaceful place for you to unwind at the end of each day.
